A BRIEF CHAT WITH DANIEL ILIESCU

Composition by Daniel Iliescu

ILIESCU: ART IS NOT AN INTELLECTUAL EXERCISE. IT EMERGES FROM WITHIN...

Q: So Daniel, how this creative energy emerges from your inner world?                                                    Iliescu: I let it flow. I don't think about energy or creativity when I paint. Art is not an intellectual constructionist product. Of course, your work has to offer some meaning and depth, otherwise it is meaningless!                                                                                                                                                                 Q: So, what is substance in art?                                                                                                                             Iliescu: Again, you are thinking and philosophizing about art. Art is mindless, timeless and infinite. Do not define it with technical words or psychoanalyze it with intellectualism. Many forms of art are shapeless, because they are beyond the immediate visual understanding of the work of an artist. When I paint, I do not search for substance. First, I relax myself. I take it easy, I draw some strokes, I experiment with movements of the strokes, the language of the ink, and during this pleasurable exercise, I found my way. And once, you feel that you are getting somewhere, that the movement of the medium you are using is on the right track, then, substance emerges. You do not think about substance, you find it...
