HILARY KOLE: "Unfortunately, there is no "middle class" in show business. Either you are a huge star, or you are struggling."

Q-If you had to write your memoirs or biography, what title would you give to your book? Hilary Kole: The joys and tribulations of a chick singer. Q: What goes in your mind, right before you appear on stage and facing your audience? Hilary Kole: I think to myself....no matter what happens out there, in an hour from now, it will be over. It could be the best performance in the world, or I could literally fall over on stage and bomb, Either way, life goes on....so why not enjoy every second of it. - That usually works for me. (except when I was on Carnegie Hall stage for the first time. Then, all I kept saying was, well THIS IS IT, KID. Q-And upon leaving the stage? Hilary Kole: Leaving the stage, I always wish I had more time. It is an incredible high, and it is always over too fast. Q-What do you notice first about a person you meet for the first time? Hilary Kole: There eyes. Q-And what people notice first about Hilary Kole? Hilary Kole: My eyes. Q-Stage is an elixir of illusion. Do you bring your life to stage, meaning Hilary Cole the human being, or the Diva in you? Hilary Kole: I bring parts of my life to the stage. Before I knew what love and loss was, I had to pretend. Now being a little older and wiser, I know first hand about all of the emotions I am singing about. Q-What are the virtues of a real singer? Hilary Kole: Virtues: honesty, a firm grasp on the subject matter. Intimacy, intelligence with a lyric. Musicianship, musicianship, musicianship. (If not musicianship, become an actor.) Q-Do you tolerate vicious artistic ambitions? Hilary Kole: I am very lucky that I have been surrounded by mostly wonderful people in the business. This is our job, but it also happens to be our passions. I understand the desperation of trying to "make it" but anyone who is making a living in the business has "made it" as far as I am concerned.
Q-What does success mean to you?
Hilary Kole:
Call me crazy, but I still truly believe that if you
take the time to learn your craft, and you have a great bit of talent,
you will be successful. As I said before, success in show business is
simply making a living. Unfortunately, there is no "middle class" in
show business. Either you are a huge star, or you are struggling. I
consider the music the most important part of my life.

Q-To YOU, what is more important success/fame or talent. Hilary Kole: Success and fame are not of our making or control, so the people who spend their lives worried about it are bound to end up unfulfilled. I have been very fulfilled so far in my journey in life because I surround myself with fabulous, artist people. Q-Any price an artist must pay to reach for stardom? Hilary Kole: Any price an artist must pay to reach for stardom? I believe that we all must do what is comfortable. I am not comfortable with being around people who do not believe that I should make it on talent alone. I am too talented for that. Q-Did you pay that price? Hilary Kole: I paid my dues, in that I have spent my entire life learning my craft, learning to compose, play the piano, and master the voice. Most people think that when you are born talented, you simply open your mouth and people throw money at you. This is not the case. I work every day to hone my skills as a performer and musician. I have been lucky with my success, but I have earned every opportunity because of my work ethic. Q-What's next on your agenda? Performance, concerts,.deals? Hilary Kole: I have an exciting summer planned. I am performing for a week in July at Birdland Jazz CLub in NYC with an amazing band including Alan Broadbent, one of the world's best vocal accompanists. I am also working on some original tunes, and getting ready to record my first CD. I will also be at Carnegie Hall in November, among other clubs in the New York area.
